Abstract

In recent years the cultivated shrimp industry has been experiencing serious economic problems. The emergence of diseases associated with inadequate management of producers has led to a reduction in average Brazilian productivity. However, some investors still see this activity as a profitable alternative and have maintained contact with the Federal University of Rio Grande Foundation - FURG in order to obtain information on the technical and economic viability of the activity for the southern region of Brazil. The low temperatures that occur during autumn and winter in Rio Grande do Sul limit shrimp farming to the hottest months. Producers must clearly know the strategy to be adopted in order for the crop to reach profitability. The shrimp offer at various times of the year, especially when obtaining better market prices is an interesting strategy from the point of view of the producer. On the other hand, crops must be in accordance with the new concepts of responsible and environmentally friendly aquaculture. This study aims to generate subsidies to produce shrimp in the extreme south of Brazil, within the new concepts of sustainable and environmentally friendly aquaculture. Thus contributing to the development of the cultivation of Litopenaeus vannamei in the extreme south of Brazil.
