Graduated in Agronomy from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS, Porto Alegre, RS (1987), Master in Renewable Natural Resources - Mie University, Japan (1990), and PhD in Applied Biological Sciences - Aquaculture from Ghent University, Belgium (2000).

From 2007 to 2017 he was Professor of Mariculture at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE). He is currently Full Professor at the Oceanography Institute at FURG, Rio Grande, RS, where he works as a professor-advisor with the Graduate Program in Aquaculture. He has experience in aquaculture, mainly with biology and technology for the creation of marine species. More recently, he has dedicated himself to aquaculture of marine bivalves.
