Graduate Program in Aquaculture (CAPES Grade 6)
The Postgraduate Program in Aquaculture (PPGAq), currently rated by CAPES as a concept 6, started its activities in 2002 driven by the expansion of national aquaculture. After 20 years of operation, the PPGAq can be considered a consolidated program and is characterized by developing its activities in line with the Institutional Development Program and the very vocation of FURG - a university focused on coastal and oceanic ecosystems. With this in mind, PPGAq teachers and students actively participate in numerous R, D & I projects with great interaction with Brazilian and foreign partners.
- The projects developed under the PPGAq are directed to the area of concentration of the program - Aquaculture, in its three lines of research:
- Production of Vertebrate Aquatic Organisms: with studies aimed at the development of technologies for the production of freshwater and marine fish;
- Production of Invertebrate Aquatic Organisms and Primary Producers: with the development of technologies for the production of shrimp, molluscs, micro and macro algae, as well as halophyte plants;
- Biotechnology Applied to Aquaculture: studies related to genetic engineering, production of aquatic organisms in a multitrophic system, evaluation of the use of antioxidant compounds in aquaculture, processing and bioproducts extracted from aquatic organisms.
In many cases, these lines act in an integrated manner in the development of innovative production systems, such as the bioflocations system (BFT), water recirculation systems (RAS) and integrated multitrophic system (IMTA), where the teams of PPGAq research are at the forefront of knowledge in Brazil and worldwide.
The infrastructure available to PPGAq researchers allows the carrying out of the most diverse studies, with high technological development, interdisciplinarity, and, in many cases, combined with the productive sector. These characteristics provide graduates with many possibilities in the labor market, whether in the academic and / or business world, both nationally and internationally. With these differentials, the PPGAq provides subsidies and collaborates with the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the UN. Through its lines of research, the PPGAq fits directly into at least 7 of the 17 SDGs, in particular SDG 2 - Zero Hunger (Ensuring sustainable food production systems and implementing resilient practices that increase the productivity and production, and that help to maintain ecosystems), and SDG 14 - Life Below Water (Increase economic benefits for developing and least developed countries, from the sustainable use of marine resources, including through sustainable management of fisheries, aquaculture and tourism).
The PPGAq student background can be assessed by the insertion of its graduates in the labor market as well as by the quality of their dissertations and theses. In recent years, three PPGAq theses received Honorable Mention nominations in the CAPES Thesis Award (2013, 2015 and 2020), in addition to the first place in the VALE-CAPES Science and Sustainability Award (2013).

2030 Agenda
In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly approved the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as a way to promote actions that eradicate poverty, protect the environment and the climate, and ensure peace and prosperity for all people. The FURG Postgraduate Program in Aquaculture (PPGAq) had no difficulties in adapting to the proposals of Agenda 2030, since, since its foundation, it has directed its efforts towards projects directly related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The history of the PPGAq, materialized in its various Dissertations, Theses and scientific publications, is in line with several of the goals proposed by Agenda 2030, but especially in the SDGs highlighted below.
ODS 2. Zero hunger
Increase the productivity and income of small producers, particularly women, indigenous people, family farmers, and fishermen, including through opportunities to add value and employment;
Ensuring sustainable food production systems and implementing resilient practices, which increase productivity and production, which help to maintain ecosystems, and which strengthen the capacity to adapt to climate change;
Maintain the genetic diversity of domesticated and wild species, including through the development of conservation techniques (cryopreservation) that allow the formation of germplasm banks.
ODS 3. Good health and well-being
Substantially reduce the number of deaths and diseases due to dangerous chemicals, contamination and air and water pollution.
Develop pathogen-free cropping systems and ensure a healthy final product;
ODS 6. Clean water and sanitation
Protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes;
Expand international cooperation and support for capacity building for developing countries in activities and programs related to water and sanitation, including water collection, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, recycling and technologies reuse.
ODS 7 - Affordable and clean energy
Substantially increase the share of renewable energies in the global energy matrix.
ODS 12 – Responsible consumption and production
Reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses;
Achieve environmentally sound handling of chemicals and all residues, throughout their life cycle, and significantly reduce their release into air, water and soil, to minimize their negative impacts on human health and the environment.
ODS 13 – Climate action
Improve education, raise awareness and human and institutional capacity on mitigation, adaptation and impact reduction.
ODS 14 – Life below water
Prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all types, especially from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution;
Manage sustainably and protect marine and coastal ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts, including through strengthening their resilience, and take measures to restore them, in order to ensure healthy and productive oceans;
Increase economic benefits for developing and least developed countries through the sustainable use of marine resources, including through sustainable management of fisheries, aquaculture and tourism;
Increase scientific knowledge, develop research capacities and transfer marine technology in order to improve the health of the oceans and increase the contribution of marine biodiversity to the development of developing and least developed countries;
Ensure the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans and their resources by implementing international law, in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which provides the legal framework for the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans and their resources.
PPGAq's activities and actions also demonstrate alignment with SDGs 4 (Quality education) e 5 (Gender equality).
PPGAq seeks to ensure inclusive, equitable and quality education. For this to happen, freedom of thought and expression are fundamental values, and they must be exercised within an environment of mutual respect, regardless of race, disability, religion, gender or sexual orientation. With this in mind, the PPGAq works to eliminate gender disparities and ensure equal access and professional training. All PPGAq student selection processes respect the minimum reserve of 20% of vacancies for black, indigenous, quilombola and disabled students, according to the FURG Graduate Affirmative Action Program (Resolution 004/2019 from CONSUN-FURG) .
Regarding gender equality, until April 2021, when this text was last updated, the PPGAq had 271 graduates, most of whom (136) were women. The trend of maintaining the gender balance among graduates remains, since, in April 2021, the PPGAq had 41 students and 30 students enrolled.
PPGAq also stands out in the following goals proposed by SDG 4:
Substantially increase the number of young people and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and professional skills, for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship;
Ensure that all students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to promote sustainable development, including through education for sustainable development;
Increase the contingent of qualified teachers, including through international cooperation for teacher training, especially in the least developed countries.

Institutional Pedagogical Project
Institutional Pedagogical Project
The Institutional Pedagogical Project - PPI 2011-2022 is FURG's strategic plan and establishes: philosophy; mission; vision; guidelines; guiding principles of teaching, research and extension; profile of servers; student profile; evaluation and planning; and strategic objectives that guide the actions of the University for a period of 12 years.
The PPI, although it presents a long-term vision, presupposes a periodic assessment linked to the mandatory reviews every four years of the Institutional Development Plan - PDI, which is the document that expresses the guiding principles, objectives, strategies and programs by which FURG's different areas of activity seek to fulfill the mission, vision and strategic objectives set out in the PPI.
In this edition, the PDI 2019/2022, the last of the current PPI, built from the institutional self-assessment process in a collaborative way between servers, students, outsourced workers and the external community, presents a set of indicators in order to better direct and evaluate actions of the University in the current local, regional, national and global scenario.

Introduction
Graduate Program in Aquaculture
Sensitive to the institutional vocation of FURG and aware of its potential, a group of professors, researchers in the area of Aquiculture, decided, from 1999, to organize a specific Graduate Program, aimed at training professionals in this area of knowledge.
The stricto sensu Graduate Program in Aquaculture (PPGAq) at the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG), has the General Objective: "To train professionals capable of planning, assisting, guiding, conducting, evaluating and preventing impacts, diagnosing problems, creating and adapt technological solutions for the cultivation of aquatic organisms' aiming to promote the scientific and technological development of the creation of aquatic organisms ".
The PPGAq's Specific Objectives are:
1. Promote the technological development of the creation of aquatic organisms;
2. Encourage studies on the nutritional requirements of potentially cultivable species;
3. Make feasible studies on the main pathologies of cultivated organisms, their impact on productive activity, their forms of prevention and control;
4. Develop studies related to biotechnology and genetic improvement of economically viable organisms for aquaculture;
5. Conduct studies aimed at the development of aquaculture;
6. To seek knowledge of the biology of reproduction of cultivable aquatic organisms, with a view to their application on a commercial scale.PPGAq Coordination (2019-2020)
